JENNI BLOG 8

I had a lie in today and got up at 8 o'clock (I can't believe I'm calling that a lie in!). My stomach wasn't feeling too friendly but I tried to ignore it. We had another Hindi lesson after breakfast before setting out in the 4x4's to see the different work areas: Thala, Sukeri, Drovi and Malanta.
Another beautiful day but by this point I was feeling quite unwell and, yet again, the possibility of accidentally descending down a cliff edge was worrying me although others seemed fine! First stop was Drovi, a very small school which you would probably drive straight past if you didn't know better. I got out of the cab and sat down whilst the others looked about, as well as feeling sick I was very shaky and dizzy.
Anju, a lovely project executive, sat with me and we chatted. We stayed there whilst the others drove to Sukeri also. She's an amazingly determined woman who pushed hard to get as much education as she could. She has a degree in politics and plans to earn the money to train to be a teacher. It made me realise how much we take our schools and suchlike for granted.
A local woman stopped for a few minutes and asked some questions that Anju translated. She asked how old I was. And if I was married. When she'd found out that I was 23 and unmarried I saw the shock in her face. Here, marriages are normally decided on at about the age of 18.
A bit later I was picked up again and we drove to Malanta. It was a rocky walk to the school and by the end of it I was shaking and dizzy again. I briefly saw Lucy and the daycare children but then Debi and Donald, a volunteer there, had to help me to a chair in the shade of a classroom. There Donald made me eat his lunch to try and make me feel better, and once again I stayed behind whilst the others went to see the final –and newest- work area, Thala.
Once feeling a bit better Donald and Padam assisted me going back up the track to the road where I'd be picked up. At the road Donald finished telling me the amazing story of his mother and the 2 of them waited with me.
Back at camp we decided which work placements we'd have. I ended up with daycare at Sukeri with Kristiana (Kris) - the present volunteer- and plantation/survey/teaching for the afternoons.
