SAY NO TO DIRTY COAL

I had never been to a campaign rally before, let alone actively participate in a huge demonstration. I felt a huge sense of dread when I thought I had missed my coach from Birmingham to Kingsnorth. Luckily, this dread was short lived, as I suddenly saw a throng of beaming activists walking towards me. An injection of excitement coursed through my veins as we all boarded the coach; a collective sense of purpose tangible.
Upon arrival, everyone congregated together in a field adorning sashes with a slogan in red stating ‘Climate Change Kills’. At the opportune moment the sashes were to be torn at the seams, one half handed to the person next to you to help create a huge (Milli)band. The message was simple but effective - punctuated by vigorous protesting and Mexican waves. The BBC and Sky were present to gain press coverage.
I’m proud to say that the campaigners present were 1000 plus strong. We all stood united, our voices one for this cause. After the demonstration, a summer fete took place in the field were speakers gave their views on climate change, the most profound speaker being Shabina Bibi, who, native to Bangladesh had had first hand experience of the effects of global warming. Why should people who have contributed so little to global warming be suffering the most?
Cynics may say that the demonstration was a waste of time; that the government will build the power station anyway. This may be the case but if there is one thing I have learned today it is this: the power of small movements is what creates tidal waves of change. Demonstrating for this campaign has reinstated my belief in becoming the change I want to see in the world. Stop Climate Change Coalition will be present in London for the next big march that will be taking place on the Saturday 5th December 2009.
