SHAILA'S POST-TRIP STORY

I am currently teaching at a local college.  My role involves both teaching English and mentoring pre-16 students who have been excluded from mainstream education. I also work closely with children that suffer from autism. In terms of my voluntary work I am still heavily involved with the Midlands Art Centre in Birmingham as a board member.

I am still active with Platform2. I chair the Birmingham meetings, which Platform2 returnees attend. Recently, I finished performing Poverty Monologues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This was an incredible experience, re-igniting my passion for writing. I am still spreading the word for Platform2 to friends, family and colleagues; trying to convince them to apply. It is working, slowly but surely.

I work closely with Stop Climate Chaos in raising the profile for The Wave taking place on December the 5th. I’m also working with another Birmingham volunteer to target local focal points in Birmingham where people can see and hear more about the march.

I'm committed to working with interfaith groups. This journey began with attending a week-long conference in Germany earlier this year.  Since then, I have become a co-founder of ‘Dancing Through Walls’, alongside six other members. The purpose of this group is to advocate peace through movement. Most recently my work involved creating dialogue between certain faith groups through conflict resolution. I have just embarked on this journey but am fascinated with the process. I am hoping to attend a 3-day training programme in Bath in November to further my understanding of conflict resolution.
