Teachings in the Desert

Teachings in the Desert is a personal account from a group of 46 volunteers who spent ten weeks living and working in rural Rajasthan India as part of Platform2.
The exhibition showcases 30 images, accompanied by text and live music, portraying personal accounts of life in a developing country, seeking to raise awareness of the harsh conditions the local people endure; their strength of character; and the poverty in which they live. It shows something of the people, the colourful nature of their personalities, their smiles and their sorrows.

Teaching in the local villages of Jaisalmer is challenging for a number of reasons, but I would like to discuss just 2 of them today. The first is the language barrier: P2 volunteers speak English with a few phrases from 'standard' Hindi, most project executives (Indian IDEX staff who work with volunteers) speak English and 'standard' Hindi, and the children speak limited 'standard' Hindi and a local dialect of their regional variety of Hindi - Rajasthani.
