Group1 Zina Blog6 / Ghana - Afadjato

So work’s been quite busy this week. We’ve been continuing with the nursery and we actually got to start working on mending the mountain trail that leads to the top of Mount Afadjato. We had to carry huge stones along the trail which would act as foot stones to help tourists find their way up the mountain. Other than that we’ve been carrying bamboo stalks across the reserve and gathering them by the side of the nursery. These will be cut and used as guards to hold the bags straight and prevent the nursery from being destroyed by rainfall.

Buki and Martin have taken on the job of designing a schools programme for the next group that follows us to use and add to. It includes possible lesson plans about wildlife that other volunteers can do weekly at many of the local wildlife clubs. This has been quite good as Daniel, Khalid and I have been able to input into the lessons as well, and Knox, our supervisor has been on hand to advise us about the local area and make sure that we are keeping in line with cultural traditions and education system too, so it should be quite comprehensive when finished. This weekend we’ve just been hanging out in the community. Daniel has been running evening maths classes with a few of the local teenagers and by all reports it’s really helping them at school which is excellent. Buki has also started a little evening English reading classes with one of the local children too. It’s great to see how we’ve managed to integrate into the community and find our own ways to help make a difference.

So next week Buki and I get to take our first lesson at the local senior secondary school and we are taking our second trip out of town to Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region. Its going to be really cool because Martin’s sister Heather is in the group that has just arrived there and we have arranged to go and meet up with them. It’ll be quite cool to meet up with another Platform2 group!
