Group1 Zina Blog1 / Ghana - Afadjato

My name is Zina Lewis I am 22, from East London and will be joining a team of volunteers to visit the Afadjato Agumatasa project in the district of Hohoe in Ghana.

I found out about the opportunity through an email from a friend asking for young people aged 18 – 25 year olds to volunteer in developing countries for a 10 week period. I had wanted to volunteer overseas for a long time but could never afford to so the fact that the trip is fully sponsored was a huge relief and a great incentive to pursue the opportunity further.

The process of applying was really quick, within a week of sending my interest and requesting further info I had received an application pack, and had my place confirmed within two weeks. After a week of knowing I had been accepted on to the programme, I had all the information I needed to get the ball rolling with applying for a VISA and getting my injections.

The things that scare me most are the “friendly” or not so friendly creatures I have been told I am likely to meet out there, as I do not even like the ones we have here! But I’m sure I’ll live… and the fact that there will be practically no Facebooking for 2 and half months!! Aaaarrrrgggghhh! Hee Hee!

But what I am looking forward to is meeting the people and exploring the culture, seeing the land and really being able to make a difference! I have been speaking to three of the volunteers on the scheme who all seem really cool and I am well excited about meeting all the guys at the departure briefing day! And the House of Commons trip sounds excellent too!!

Look forward to sharing more with you all as the journey continues!
